Let's Meet at the Pet Shop! A 1958 Teen Dress
"Let’s Meet at the Pet Shop!” is inspired by Butterick 8253, a charming dress pattern dating from 1957–58. The design captures one of the defining silhouettes of the late 1950s: a close-fitting bodice with a trim waist flowing into a wide flared skirt.
The dress is shaped with eight princess-seamed panels below a high front yoke. It has a dainty square collar, and the sleeves are finished with folded cuffs. The bodice and sleeves can be embellished with buttoned tabs.
This pattern provides several options that combine for different looks. There are three sleeve lengths: short, elbow-length and three-quarter-length. The collar and cuffs can be made in a contrasting colour to the main fabric.
• View A has a smooth bodice, with a simple front yoke and no other embellishment.
• View B has the same yoke bodice but with two horizontal buttoned tabs at the yoke seamline, mimicking the look of welt pockets.
• View C has the same yoke bodice but with a vertical buttoned tab at the bodice center front, and a buttoned tab on the elbow-length or three-quarter-length sleeves.
The back of the dress can be fastened with four buttons and buttonholes, snaps or hook and loop tape.
To give your dress that full, fluffy skirt popular at the time, instructions are provided for an easy tulle petticoat.
Techniques included in the pattern: applying a collar, sewing a princess seam, setting an eased sleeve, adding folded cuffs to a sleeve, adding buttoned tab details to a bodice, finishing a curved hemline.

Suggested Fabrics: Dress: light- to medium-weight cotton, cotton blends, rayon, poplin, shirting. Petticoat: tulle ribbon or tulle fabric
Supplies Needed:
Dress:
• Fabric: 1/2 yard. Scrap for contrasting collar and cuffs, if desired.
• Lightweight fusible interfacing.
• Four snap sets OR four ¼”- 3/8” wide buttons OR 9 inches of soft ¼” wide hook and loop tape for dress back closure.
• View B: Two ¼” buttons for front bodice tabs.
• View C: Five ¼” buttons for front bodice and sleeve tabs.
Petticoat:
• 2.5 yards of 6” wide tulle ribbon or 1/2 yard of tulle fabric 54” wide
• 10 inches of ¼” elastic.
• 2 yards of 1” – 1 ¼” wide lace for bottom of petticoat. Your choice of additional lace and ribbon trims.
