Wrapped Kalasaris Dress 16" and 18" Doll Clothes

5 reviews   |

The Kalasaris was a standard style dress worn by Ancient Egyptian women. No original dresses exist, so the construction and design of this pattern is based on pictures from ancient wall art and other historical construction techniques. While this dress by Thimbles and Acorns  makes a beautiful ancient reproduction, the timelessness of the pattern makes a sweet modern sundress as well.
The dress is made from a simple rectangle of fabric with two fabric straps that tie in the back with fabric loops to hold them in place. Its simplicity makes it an excellent pattern for beginning seamstresses.

Great for beginners!

I really enjoyed making this dress. The pattern was simple to cut out and put together. Lots of straight sewing is involved, so I think this would be a great item to have a beginner do. I used an Indian Muslin (cheesecloth) for the fabric which is a crinkled fabric. I wanted to test the pattern first before I used my good handkerchief linen. Needless to say I am so pleased with the results. I tried it on my 20 inch Australian Girl doll and it fits her well. The length comes to about mid-calf on her. There are two options for cutting the shoulder straps. I cut mine on the straight grain, and it still sewed up well, and didn't need the extra stretch when tying the straps. I purchased this pattern for the ancient vibe, but it would work up well in modern fabrics too. I would recommend this for a quick and easy sew for when your doll is needing a new dress in a hurry or for using as a teaching tool for a beginner seamstress just learning how to sew straight seams and hems, as neither are too long or difficult.

Pixie Faire Wrapped Kalasaris Dress 16 and 18 Doll Clothes Review

Super cute and easy to make

I made this dress for my My Friend Mandy doll using the 16 inch doll instructions. I was a little confused about the hem and the top facing instructions but once I did them I understood what was going where. The strap placement is off a bit for Mandy so if I make again I will pin the straps in place and then wrap it so I can adjust the straps before sewing. It looks super cute!

Wrapped Kalasaris Dress

I love how this is part of a series of historical patterns. I learn so much by doing these Thimbles and Acorns patterns. This one is lovely in that there is only wrapping and tying to close it. Little girls should be able to put it on by themselves without having to bother with snaps or buttons.

Kalasaris - versatile pattern

I know Shari designed this to be an historical costume. But I decided to put a modern twist on it. I used a beach colored print for the pattern, and made it knee length. When wrapped on the doll, it looks like a beach cover up. When unwrapped, it is a rectangle about 18" x 8" - perfect for a beach chair cover. I used it a a seat cover over an Adirondack chair. The little straps that are used to tie it as a dress are perfect for tying the blanket to the chair to keep it from blowing away. The pattern gives great instructions for sewing very fine spaghetti straps for the ties. I'll be making more of these. I couldn't believe how easy they were to sew and turn!

Great history lesson!

This dress was incredibly easy to sew. It's very, very simple. It is not so simple to put the dress on the doll, LOL! I definitely needed the instructions that were included in the pattern on how to put the dress on. This dress is a great history lesson and I am so excited that patterns like this one exist.
