A family tradition that we have at Christmas is getting together at my mom’s house. I have five siblings and my mom is 86. I have always spent Christmas at my mom’s. Lately, we have had this tradition of having a penny auction. My sister is a manager of a running store and gets a lot of freebies. She puts them in bags. For each bag she reads a funny clue. We bid on the items with our 15 pennies. Sometimes the prizes are great and sometimes they’re not, but it’s fun!

As a military family, we spent time in Germany many years ago — our children were young — about 3 and 7.. We adopted several of the German Christmas traditions from way back then. Our children, now adults with families of their own, have passed down these traditions to their young children. Our favorite is St. Nicholaus Day — you put your boots (shoes) by the front door or chimney on December 5th. If you have been a good boy/girl, Santa will leave you a small gift for you to find the next morning. It’s fun to watch the smiles as they creep out of their rooms to see if they are on Santa’s “good” list.
