One of the cultures that I have been studying is the East Indian culture. As a student in high school, we had a girl who immigrated to Canada from India. She came to school in her native dress and had her thick black hair in a braid. She was quite shy, and she decided to cut her hair and dress like us. I was so disappointed because I thought that their manner of dress was quite feminine. Their beautiful fabrics and the manner they were decorated in has impressed me, that led me to study their culture and traditions.

My favorite cultural traditions take place in my kitchen! I bake a variety of traditional Italian cookies and sweets, such as pizzelles and biscotti. I also cook traditional Italian meals for my family. My homemade sauce & meatballs are amazing! A cultural pattern that I would like to see offered at Pixie Faire is a traditional Italian folk or peasant dress or dance costume, such as the Tarantella dress.

Oh, goodness! All of answers are so good! My husband is mostly Scots-English, with some Cherokee seasoning. I’m German and Scots. I’d love to win these costumes, but I would be interested in German regional costumes and traditional Cherokee clothing. Each nation or tribe has their own clothing, so you can’t just lump it together under some generic First Nations.

The culture I would like to see represented is one that is overlooked, misrepresented and misunderstood. It is the Appalachian Mountain culture of the eastern U.S. This culture leans heavily on the Scots-Irish ancestry but is a unique mix of heritage. The language, however, is said to be the same as that spoken by English aristocracy in the 17th-18th centuries. Also in the Appalachian culture is the Malungeons. This group has a mixed heritage said to be scots-irish, Native American, Spanish, African American and Middle Eastern. At one point in history they were known as “white people of color”. These are little known facts but have been extensively researched by some from this region. I wouldn’t know where to start with a pattern. Things that mark the region are mountain music, moonshining and coal mining. The only distinctive clothing that I know are the bibed overalls. I think a hiking outfit with bibed overalls hiking the Appalachian Trail would be a way to honor the culture.

A FAVORITE CULTURAL TRADITION I TAKE PART IN concerns the one of mince pies bringing you luck. I’m from Wales but my grandfather was from the Shetlands in Scotland. He started us off with this little bit of good luck . In the days before shop pies, you would only eat a mince pie during the 12 days of Christmas. Starting Christmas eve you would eat one pie each night at different houses. This was meant to bring you good luck in the year ahead. Ofcause it also told you who might be the better cook, for visiting more often.

I’m Scottish, Irish and English but we really only do the wearing of the green on St. Patrick’s day. We also do good luck Hoppin’ John (black eyed peas and rice) dinner every New Year’s day as a nod to our American southern background—much of the early mining men came to the U.S. from these countries to work very early on. They brought the hand carried meal of Cornish pasties with them.

Looking over your patterns, I think you’re fairly well rounded, but I would buy some Hispanic patterns such as Salsa dresses and the brightly colored tops and skirts as I think they’re gorgeous!

A favorite cultural tradition I take part in & find interesting is…Hogmanay. Home & hearth get a good cleaning. Debts are to be cleared before the new year. The bells strike at midnight, all sing ‘Auld Lang Syne just after midnight & the first-footer arrives. Our tradition reminds me of scripture verses…old is made new, forgive us our debts, remember all the ways you’ve been blessed & have overcome in the past year & start new-all things are made new! This tradition welcomes both family & strangers :)
A cultural pattern I would like to see offered at Pixie Faire would be…a featurette of various cultures…possibly a monthly sort of thing? Few are of a singular culture, ye olde melting pot if you will. Would be appropriate because ‘Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world, red & yellow, black & white, we’re all precious in his sight…’

My mother was 75% Scottish and loved all things from Scotland. We have a traditional cookie recipe which we call “Scotch cookies”. It is a shortbread made from flour, brown sugar and unsalted butter which is rolled out and cut into 2-3" circles. Then we mark the tops with a pattern using a table fork. The mark on top distinguishes each family’s cookies – so no other family marks theirs the way we mark ours.

I’m kind of having a nerd brainsplosion because ethnic/folk traditional costumes are suuuper my thing!

My favourite cultural tradition to take part in has not come to pass yet since I’m not yet with the people I want to celebrate, but it will be a more traditional celebration of Yule/Winter Solstice.

I’d love to see patterns offered for folk clothing of Tunisia, Dominica/Lesser Antilles, Azerbaijan, Croatian, Iceland, India, Gambia, Namibia, Russia, Greece, and Armenia. I know that’s a lot, but items like lehangas, “kavadi caftani”, koyneks, upphluturs, the various cultural head scarves with beads and embroidery and coins are so so beautiful!
I know that a lot of that would be quite a bit of work, but even some of the traditional embroidery would be soooo great. Armenian embroidery, Zashiko, Pathani, Shevitza, any of it would be worth including on the website, honestly!

We are scottish, and one of the traditions passed down through the family deals with Hogmanay (New Year): we have a special dinner of Haggis, which we pipe in and address. We set a place for those no longer with us. Near the end of the meal we have a time when we lift a glass to those no longer with us. Each person in turn names a person who matters, who has passed on. A few people share fond memories, and we toast the person with a sip. Our only change to this tradition is that we allow water or soda, and not just the water-of-life (whiskey).
You are all looking at the cultural pattern I want the most. I know my luck does not extend to winning these, so I will be buying them BOGO.
Thanks, Pixie Faire, for your generosity and community!
