Hi Everyone! In Part 4, I'm back to wrap up the Back To School topic with a look at a few fun and creative ways to "Jazz up Your Jeans" - A Back To School essential!
In this video, I'll demonstrate a few new tutorial ideas inspired by current trends for denim. I've had so much fun creating these projects and can't wait to share them with you!
Follow along in the video to watch the full set of tutorials.
Project One - The Patchwork Jeans
For this project I used the Liberty Jane Jeans bootcut variation. To prep for my project I created a patchwork piece of fabric large enough for one Jeans Front pattern piece.
To create my patchwork fabric, I used the Tilda Creating Memories Collection 10 woven fabrics (four different fabrics). I cut 1-inch strips, then stacked them and cut them into 1-inch blocks.
For the backing, I used Pellon SF101 fusible interfacing (but any lightweight fusible interfacing would work). I drew a grid of 1-inch blocks on the fusible side and placed the 1-inch fabric block on it with random placement. I pressed the blocks to set. Next, with right sides together, I folded the blocks along the vertical lines, and stitched with a shy 1/4" seam allowance. I pressed the seam allowances to one side, clipped into the seam allowance at the horizontal line marks, then folded the blocks RST along the horizontal lines and stitched as before.
Once all the stitching is complete, seam allowances trimmed, and fabric pressed - it's time to cut out the jeans front from the patchwork fabric! For the remainder of the jeans, I used the light wash stretch denim that is part of the Collection 10 Pixie Pack as well. I sewed up the jeans as instructed in the pattern, and voila! They turned out just darling, don't you think!
Project Two - Crochet Cuff Capris
Crochet accents are so on-trend in fashion right now. When I saw these pants and shorts with crocheted cuffs I knew I had to re-create this look! If you don't crochet, don't fear! You can recreate this look using a variety of 1/2-inch trims or decorative stitches on your sewing machine too!
For this project I used a pair of jeans made from the Liberty Jane Skinny Jeans pattern. I used the smaller scale crochet granny squares I've been creating with tatting cord and a 0.6mm hook. For the 18-inch jeans, I needed seven granny squares to cover the hemline. Once I determined the length of the jeans. I simply applied the trim to the hemline and stitched it down around the edges, overlapping the trim at the inner leg seamline. I also added the tiny cluny trim to the front pockets to balance out the overall look!
Another Project Idea - Flared Denim Accent
Here's another cute design idea that I saw when looking at the others. This one has an inset piece creating the exaggerated flare leg. This can be done with a delicate lace, an embroidered inset, or an accent fabric. Lucky for you, J Lyn Boutique has a pattern available that creates this design element adorably! The Sunshine and Daisies bell-bottom jeans is pictured above and can be used to create a look just like these examples.

So adorable. May I ask what kind of granny square pattern are you using? Just a regular with different thread. I use to crochet for my small dollhouse but that was so many years ago.
