I shop for fabric at the Auburn Fabric Outlet. It is located in Auburn, MA. All of their fabric sells for $2.99 /yd. They have all types including upholstery weight. Their other products…notions, patterns thread etc. tend to be pricey but they have the best fabric prices. I’m lucky to live 4 miles from there.

For the last year I’ve mostly shopped for elastic for masks and for stabilizers to use with my embroidery machine. I used Amazon because of the quick shipping. I’ve been happy with most of my purchases.

Most recently I ordered from Glitter Bug Fairy and was very impressed with their quick service near the holidays. The owner, Shanna Neylon was super friendly and helpful.

I have been crafting for about 60 years; and as any crafter/sewer can tell you , one can accumulate a boat load of fabric, threads, rulers, patterns and miscellaneous craft items in a short period of time. Needless to say, I have a few items on hand. During the Last 9 months, I have learned how to shop my stash. Additionally, I have learned that my customer service has not let me down. When I have an issue, I always find a way to satisfy my needs.

I shop for sewing supplies online, at Joann’s and on Facebook marketplace. I use online for things like presser feet and replacement cords. I like the ease of browsing for obscure items and reading the reviews. I use Joann’s for fabric because I like to touch the fabric first. And Facebook marketplace is good for getting things I didn’t know I wanted but the price is great!

My favorite place to shop for fabric is an heirloom sewing store like Lace Cottage. The cotton fabrics are lightweight, the quality is splendid and they are SO lovely to smock and sew! It’s hard to describe how yummy the fabric feels.
While expensive, it doesn’t take much to make a doll dress and I can often find something marked down in the remnant bin. They also carry narrow French laces, Swiss trims, baby ticktack and tiny Pearl buttons.

“I shop for sewing supplies primarily at Joann Fabric but sometimes find items like buttions, snaps, elastic etc. online at Home Sew, Nancy Notions and once at Bee Lee which is out of business. If I am going by Hobby Lobby I will stop and see if they have anything new or different. I like to be able see, feel, and judge if the fabric , bias tape, zippers, buttons will work for my projects. There were a few individuals working at local Joann Fabrics who are very helpful and make other suggestions when I cannot find that certain item which would make my project unique.

I shop the thrift stores and yard sales when that is available. It is quite a drive to JoAnn’s we have no quilt shops here. If I get a chance to go to a larger town I try to stock up on the things I have been needing to finish a project. Here the internet is also hit & miss so that can be a problem but I have a pretty good stash and I can always move to another craft till something becomes available.

I shop for fabric and notions mainly at the local Joann’s because I prefer to inspect the fabric before purchasing. I miss Hancock Fabrics where the salespeople were careful to cut generously enough to allow for the fact that lots of fabric is seriously off-grain. I need to try some of the online stores for doll-size zippers and buckles. Glad to see everyone else’s suggestions and experience with online purchases.

I shop for my ‘whole-piece-uncut’ fabrics on eBay….but that’s AFTER I have treasure-hunted my local thrift shops 1st! I hunt silks, embroidered fabrics, leathers. Expensive fabrics at a fraction of the cost. NOT-to-mention helping save the planet by re-purposing! LOVE that I discovered this option! Notions usually come from quilt stores. I live out in the country and mail-order is my source. I’m a ’people-person, so I usually have good relationships with custmer service peoples!

I find it hard to find supplies in my rural small town in Nova Scotia. Before Covid, I shopped my way to Florida and back each winter. We don’t have Hobby Lobby or Joann’s at home so I go nuts when I get to them. I have ordered direct from Kam Snaps and love the size 16 snaps for the dolls. I have also ordered on Ebay and Etsy. I used to travel up and down the east coast on average three times each year, since I always drove I was able to often drive off the beaten path to visit small fabric stores. Now that my husband has retired I find myself spending more time at home and shoppiing mainly at JoAnn Fabrics. I find the fabric adequate but often wish there was somewhere close with a better quality fabric
