A favorite tradition I find interesting is the Las Posadas talked about in Josephina’s Christmas story.
I enjoy viewing and creating dance regalia of our Native American People. I think it is much better to create the attire representative of individual nations. Not the cowboy and indian costumes we grew up with as children. I know I am of Choctaw desent and am proud to be part of the first Americans of the U.S.A.
A favorite cultural tradition in our Texas family is celebrating Juneteenth every year on June 19th. There is a big parade, excellent music, good food, and lots of fun with family, neighbors and friends. Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 that people learned, more than two years after the fact, of the emancipation of slaves in Texas. I would love to see a pattern for a dashiki dress and head wrap added to the Cultural Pattern Colection.
While attending high school, a new student from India transferred to our school. The first day she wore her manner of dress. I suppose she wanted to fit in with the rest of us, so she came to school one morning dressed like us. It made me want to study her homeland and their tradition of clothing that was not like ours, but totally, a step away from what we are used to.
