I crochet and knit preemie hats for charity. I sew mostly for gift giving, but also for our home. On average, I spend 14 hours a week, mostly in the evenings, on my sewing and other needle crafts.
I sew primarily as a hobby. On average, I spend very little time in it because I went up to full time at my job and have little time left for fun things.

I sewed originally out of necessity to alter the hand-me-down clothes for my girls, since my husband was in school with no income for the first 10 years of our marriage. My girls are grown, and my two granddaughters now need their clothes altered, plus I have been able to create a few original outfits for them. Life has taken a unfortunate turn for me currently, however, as my husband’s work recently has caused us to move and I see another move in the near future, so instead of working, I am trying to use up the 9+ boxes of random material I have on hand and either make purses for the Sew Powerful Purse Project, or make Preemie dresses that I have been donating to the NICU hospital where my first granddaughter spent the first 5 weeks of her life. That way there won’t be so much stuff to move…..so now, I guess you would say that I use sewing as a service outlet. I hope to spend about 30 hours per week sewing in the next 4 months.
