I love working with the stash of cotton fabrics I have that were once my grandmother’s and mother’s. Each time I use one of these vintage fabrics, so many fond memories return as I can still see the big quilting frame set up in grandma’s living room and the ladies gathered around stitiching. And each project completed with these fabrics are filled with such precious memories.

I don’t often sew with the fancy fabrics—silk, cashmere, etc. I go for the practical. I love making baby PJ’s with stretch terry. I adapted my pattern for zippers instead of gripper snaps. Makes changing a baby so quick and easy.

It’s so hard too choose, but vintage woven cashmere is glorious to sew by hand or machine.
My favorite fabric to sew with is still good quality cotton or other reasonably stable fabrics. I sew on my 1972 Sears Kenmore machine and it still works like a champ. It has stretch, darning, smocking look, and edge finishing stitches; a monogrammer; a super buttonholer; and design cams so fills the bill for many fabrics. I got a good quality walking or roller foot for knits for Christmas from my daughter that should help considerably with really stretchy fabrics and I’m looking forward to trying it out soon!
Cottons are my favorite fabrics to sew with—cotton flannel, cotton batiks, quilting cotton, and just about any type of cotton as they are so versatile.

…lycra with spandex. I’ve been sewing swimwear since the 70’s, first for myself, then for a top synchronized swim team, and now for dolls. Although I love good cotton fabric, my favorite fabric to sew with is quality woolens. I was a 4-H member for years as a young person, and each year they had a “Make It With Wool” contest which I loved. I think it was sponsored by local sheep growers. I can also do colourblock with the variety of colourways before cutting the pieces to sew together.
An advantage of having a huge variety of fabrics similar but in different colourways, in 2020, was that I had the materials on hand to create wonderful masks when the pandemic hit last February and ediicts in our area strongly recommended mask wearing. Once I figured out that spandex was a reasonable alternative for elastic for masks, and coffee closers worked well for the wire at the top, I was off and running.
