The most important part of the pattern to me is the pictures and steip by step instructions on cutting out and sewing. I also love the pictures of garments made. Gives me ideas of different fabrics to use. I never print the written instructions out but they are always on my computer if needed. Love all the different disigners.

The most useful features in a pattern for me are clear and concise instructions and step by step pictures. Sometimes the pictures are done with such closely matching thread that it’s hard to tell what’s really supposed to happen, especially with tricky parts and pieces. Maybe using light fabrics with dark thread or the other way around would be useful for demonstration purposes.

The most important feature of a pattern is the picture of the finished garment on the front of the pattern “envelope.” If it doesn’t look interesting, or if the fit is sloppy looking—too big, too small, or if the fabrics it’s made from are boring or just not overall appealing, I’m not inclined to buy the pattern. I don’t really pay much attention to instructions. After all these years, I pretty much have my own way of assembling a garment anyway.

The most important part of a pattern to me is clear instructions. The pieces alone are not enough without great step by step instructions. Photos are only useful if they clearly illustrate the step and not just the finished itemZ helpful also if they use contrasting fabric and threads. I also like to print the shorter version with just words so keep those manageable ie smaller type and space. so the fewest pages are printed. I can often refer to the computer but not always. This is often true for knitting patterns . A few times the words alone were about as many pages as the first set

I have had to ditch a project or two in my lifetime because the instructions just weren’t clear and the illustrations didn’t make sense. The most important\useful feature or element in a pattern is clarity. A picture is worth a thousand words. The pictures need to be crisp and clear so that details don’t disappear into dark colors or shadow. Often the initial garment was made with a dark fabric. This may look sharp on the sample garment, but I find that it hides details that I want to see, especially when the construction is pictured. We can’t forget the importance of color value when the instructional photos are taken. It makes the details show or hide. Thanks for the opportunity! Happy stitching.

The most important\useful feature or element in a pattern is, as everyone has said, precise instructions and on point pictures or illustrations. A video is not common, but I wish there was a video of every single pattern I use! I like to purchase patterns from a company or person that uses a good “tester”. Having devised a pattern or two myself, I learned that because I know what I am doing and what outcome to expect, I can NOT be the pattern TESTER. It all seems obvious to me and that is no good. You have to have someone else, a novice if possible, try to follow the instructions and tell you where they went wrong so you can adjust the instructions accordingly. I like a company that TESTS their patterns.
