My favorite holiday tradition is to take time to look at all the lights and think of the future being brighter, the wreaths in their eternal circles and the trees with their tops pointed to the sky (save for the ones that now hang upside down).

My favorite holiday tradition is sharing time with the neighborhood ’s young children. They come to visit me. and I always make something just for them. Their sweet hugs and voices are so touching to my heart. I love the little children who share their life with me. I guess I am the neighborhood grandma.

My favorite tradition at Christmas is ode writing. This was started many years ago by my grandmother, who was in the habit of writing clever poems to attach to gifts that she was giving to us. Long after her passing we’ve continued this wonderful tradition – Christmas is just as much about reading out loud to everyone the ode attached to your gift as it is about the gift inside! Grandma Weiss is surely with us each and every Christmas.

Favorite Christmas tradition is spending time with my family. It is especially special since besides celebrating the birth of Christ I also get to celebrate the gift of my most wonderful present ever. My first grandchild was born on Christmas day. To be able to have been there for her birth and to celebrate it with her and the rest of my family is very special. My daughter has started one her favorite tradition- when they were little we would go to church and then home for waffles and sausage for dinner on Christmas eve. It is wonderful celebrating 2 traditions.

My favorite tradition is decorating the Christmas tree with ornaments from the glass bead strings from my grandparents, ornaments from both sets of parents from dh and my childhood and ones we’ve collected over the years. The first to go on is our Christmas elf that dh gave me when we were dating, and he’s also the last to come off. This will be the elf’s 50th year guarding our tree.

My favorite holiday tradition is placing an orange in the kids stockings, to remind them how truly blessed they were. You see, when my father was growing up in the 1920’s, there were seven kids in his family, and there was not enough money for toys. Instead, each child would receive a book and an orange in their stocking. They would read their book and then exchange with their siblings to share the joy. And the orange was a special treat!

My favorite holiday tradition is thrift shopping for treasures with my children and helping them wrap all the fun gifts they found for family and friends. (The BEST treasure was the $5 beat-up Gotz doll I found, repaired and sewed a new outfit for; she was my daughters first 18" doll and came with a note saying how excited she was to be with a new little girl with “spa” pictures of her repair. Over the years, we have only added dolls to the collection needing the same love and care:).

My favorite tradition is that on Christmas Eve, my family, my sister in law’s family, and my father and mother in law all meet at the February cemetary. My husband’s (and sister in law’s) mom and sister and our nephew are all buried next to each other. We light luminaries and surround their headstones with them. Then we sing Christmas carols, always ending with Silent Night. It’s so beautiful as we drive away to look back and see the headstones glowing. It’s the perfect way to remember those family members who aren’t with us anymore.

My favorite holiday tradition. We build “graham cracker houses” instead of gingerbread houses. Christmas music playing everyone trying to get the best candies. Grandkids get a belly laugh out of their papa snitching construction pieces when he thinks no ones looking. Lots of life, laughs, love and contentment.
