I started making doll clothes for my daughter while we stationed in Japan. This was in 1964. At the time, there was really no place to buy the doll clothes to fit the Barbie dolls, so I started doing it for her, and the next thing I knew, other mothers were buying my doll clothes. Even my seamstress (everyone had one then), gave me scraps of beautiful fabrics, if I would make clothes for her daughters Barbie. Now I just do the 18" doll clothes as a hobby and stress reliever. I do one craft show a year, and enjoy seeing the little girls going thru the dresses, etc. just to find the right one for their dolls….

I see costumes for our middle school drama club during the productions it can be 2-3 hours per day. I also teach our crew how to sew as well. I knit and crochet as a stress relief whenever I have free time usually on the weekends when not in production for 3-4 hours. During the summer I see doll clothes for fun and to try to maintain my dexterity. I can spend 5-6 hours a day on projects when I focus.

I sew primarily to fulfill my responsibilities as the President of Stitchin’ for Kids. On average, I spend 20 to 30 hours per week sewing or, at least, I aim for that much, since the doll clothes I make go to children in the hospital for long term stays. Since I love to sew and love to think I’m helping brighten the days of ill children, this is no hardship!

“I sew primarily as a hobby; on average, I spend 4 hours in a week sewing." In 2016, I finally was able to buy a very nice sewing/embroidery machine and soon now, I hope to be sewing 2-4 hours per day instead of per week. When my children were young, I sewed all their clothing, from infant on up, as well as my own. The only store bought dresses my daughter had were given as gifts from others. I began sewing about age 12 when my very favorite aunt taught me to sew. The year I entered high school, I made all my school clothing that summer before school started.

I sew and crochet as a hobby, but because I love to sew so much I have way too much inventory for the dolls so, I’ve recently began going to craft shows to sell clothes. I have teams up with a local woman to crochet blankets for hospitalized vets, which we give away free. I probably work on these items about 10 hours a week or so. Love doing both and so enjoy sewing.

I sew primarily as a hobby. ) On average, I spend 2-3 hours per week (usually hemming or mending). A couple times a year, I get crafty and start cranking our projects. Last year I gave my 3 year old niece an 18-inch doll for Christmas. I figure every doll should come with a whole wardrobe! I made everything from skirts and jeans to dresses, pajamas, and a robe. Even a wedding dress! I was concerned my nice would have trouble changing the clothes, but she zipped through 7 wardrobe changes in the first 15 minutes!

I love to sew! I also love other crafts such as beading and table scaping. Once the sewing machine is up I’m busy at it. Once it is put away (cleaning, company coming, guests staying, traveling, etc.) I only dream about sewing. My solution is handwork. I’m probably the only person who loves to sew hems by hand and snaps for some closures, etc. I love the challenge of making quilt tops, and sewing on the binding, however have little interest in machine quilting, so usually hire someone to do that task. I’m also very naughty when visiting a fabric store. Dream! Dream! Dream!
Thanks, Sandy

I sew and crochet primarily as a hobby, although I have entertained the idea of starting a home business when I retire. I started sewing in my teens and made many of my own clothes. I picked it up again when my girls were young. I supplemented their American Girl wardrobes with my own creations. When they were “too old” for dolls I appropriated their dolls and added a few of my own. I enjoy sewing and designing for my doll collection. I also crochet in the evenings, mostly afghans, but also hats and sweaters for dolls. The amount of time I spend sewing and crocheting varies from nothing at all for weeks to 8 or 9 hours a day when I am not working or involved in other hobbies; reading, scrap booking or gardening.

I sew primarily as a hobby. When I am on a roll, it can be for an hour or two a day. Other times, I can go for weeks without sewing. Depends on the ‘season’ of my hobby and what’s got me excited … dressing the doll, playing with the doll, or crafting accessories for the doll. When I was going through chemo, having small projects to sew on was a great way to pass the time in the early days … fun for me, fun for the nurses, and they taught me a few things while I was at it. :) It’s also been a good way to introduce my daughter to sewing skills … now she creates fashions for herself, not just her dolls.
