I sew and knit mainly for my home based business and for charity donations. I probably spend 30-40 hours a week doing this but it’s woven in with family responsibilities so some days it’s more and some days less.

I sew primarily for my doll clothes business and as an outlet for my creative side. I love putting all of the elements together and coming up with unique outfits for my customers. I spend every hour I can sewing but that varies according to the season. As we farm, there is always so much to do all year round so I take advantage of any free time I get.some weeks it’s all day, every day. Others I might only get a couple of hours here and there.

I sew for church (banners and altar cloths), my former middle school theatre (costumes), and used to sew for our high school theatre and choir. During theatre season, I can sew up to 14 hours a day for 6 to 7 hours a day for 2 1/2 months. Last year, I made 69 “Little Mermaid” costumes for my middle school. I also redress used dolls in historical, modern, and fantasy costumes. I am a 44 year 4-H leader, teaching sewing, crocheting, knitting, jewelry making, basketry, flower making: things that I had to learn as I costumed our award winning high school theatre productions. I have 4 sewing machines, a serger, and an embroidery machine, all of which I use for doll clothes making, as well as costuming students.

“I sew primarily as a hobby business on average, I spend 10 to 15 hours a week. I make doll clothes and other craft items to sell at one craft show a year. I also design and make wedding gowns. I’ve sewn since I was tall enough to reach the treadle pedal, so sewing automatically grew into a very important part of my life. I almost have my MFA in costume design for the theatre which taught me that I wanted my creative sewing remain a hobby!

I sew primarily to make historical outfits for my daughter’s AG dolls. I love to do it when I can find the time. It’s been a while since I’ve had a good groove going due to moving/packing/unpacking and then having to put everything away again for the holidays. But once the decorations are put away, I will get it all out again and set up shop in my dining room. Once I get a good groove going, I spend ~ 8-10 hours per week working on an outfit. I’m self taught in the past 5 years and it takes me a long time to create one outfit, but it’s complete with dress, bloomers/cami and bonnets!
